First of all, kudos to actor Ajith who dares to break his heroic image every time and takes the road not taken, where he shines in negative roles. After 'Mankatha' and 'Billa' where his characters had plenty of negative shades, Aarambam is yet another milestone in his career.
Directed by Vishunvardhan, Aarambam is a slick action packed entertainer which will be a massive treat for Ajith fans and his charismatic charms will equally impress every day movie goer as well. There's nothing much to reveal about the story line because it's loosely based on the English movie SwordFish but it is presentation that matters!
First half of the movie is exceptionally fast and the introduction scenes are completely underplayed where Ajith simply walks into the scene, no hype or hoolah around it! Arya, Nayanthara and Tapsee are the star studded supporting cast but it is Ajith who completely steals the show. Arya has good screen time and a notable role while Tapsee is the glam doll.
Director Vishnuvardhan has a strong presence in the movie and for the first time, he has ventured out of his usual script style into something ambitious. The plot line is based on corruption and how it affects a country's growth. It also focuses on encouraging people to use their best skills for the sake of own's country and do good rather than being selfish all the time.

There's plenty of twists and turns strewn throughout the movie to keep you at the edge of the seat. But, only if editor Sreekar Prasad has choosen to trim the second half a bit, the movie would have been even more racy and a delight to watch. Musical score by Yuvan Shankar Raja is mediocre and the background composition, even though appealing is not up to the level that he delivered for 'Mankatha'. The director should've skipped the songs or reduced the number, a change that Tamil cinema needs at the moment to deliver immersive movies.
Cinematography by Omprakash is rich and vibrant, with believable color tone in almost every scene. It's no wonder the director of 'Billa' has recreated another stylish entertainer for Ajith. The movie is a steep deviation from the comedy entertainer that's been flooding Kollywood for almost months now and is a welcome relief for those who prefer something new.
Aarambam is jam packed with action sequences where Ajith performed some risky stunts to add authenticity. Nayanthara has limited space to perform whereas Arya isn't much of a performer these days. Talented actor Kishore has done a laudable job while Rana Daggubati in a cameo is another wise choice.
For the racy screenplay, impressive cinematography, Ajith's charismatic charm and presentation, Aarambam is worth a watch, if you can overlook those few hiccups.
