Irandaam Ulagam/Varna - messed up fantasy

Irandaam Ulagam/Varna is a messed up fantasy love story that fails to mesmerize with its lies!

Irandam Ulagam Review

Frankly speaking, all of us are fans of director Selvaraghavan’s storytelling skills. His 7G Rainbow Colony remains our favourite and we consider it one of the finest romantic tragedies ever made in Indian Cinema. The psycho thriller Kadhal Kondaen was an entertainer. His visionary project Aayirathil Oruvan had excellent visuals, though it went wrong post-interval with the screenplay and story. After the emotional journey of Mayakkam Enna, we (like all of you) were expecting his Irandaam Ulagam to be a fantasy that would remain in our hearts for long.

But we are dumbstruck after seeing the master storyteller reveal his fantasy love story on screen. Disappointment is guaranteed if you were expecting something spectacular and on par with international cinema. This is no period flick or story of dungeons and dragons. Yes, the lead actors in the fantasy world fight with monsters, but it ends with just one sequence. There is no evil villain with an army of dragons or men like The Lord of the Rings series, though he dreams of one world, one god and one king. It’s more of a love story as promoted since launch. A collision of love story in different worlds, it does seem interesting when it starts. But it later develops to be more of a comedy than an emotional love story, and hence misses connecting with the audience.

Irandam Ulagam Review

The narration gets dragging. Anirudh’s background score is a major letdown. Arya and Anushka try convincing us, but we are not able to take them seriously. Overall, the present day love story is more interesting than the one in the fantasy world. One only wishes that Selvaraghavan had narrated a single love story longer, the present one. Irandaam Ulagam is not science fiction, but a messed up fantasy love story that fails to mesmerize with its lies. Even if we are ready to suspend our disbelief, it is neither believable nor convincing. All that we can say is that Aayirathil Oruvan is a masterpiece compared to Irandaam Ulagam!

Overall Rating: 2.5/5
